Meditation 2 (Basic): Body Awareness

Body Awareness

This is a type of meditation that martial artists, dancers and yogis get really good at, and sitting meditators sometimes fail to master. We want to meditate to create space between our thinking mind and our being-ness, but we also want to cultivate a noticeable increase in presence through deeper embodiment. What does that mean? If you are in your head all day, your body can feel like something you drag around like a pet you can't escape. Its needs for food and going to the bathroom can seem annoying, when you just want to finish that computer thing you're working on. Body Awareness is important to cultivate because the body is the source of incredible experiences. The deeper you can penetrate your own body with your mind, the more expanded your mental awareness can be and the more impact your physical presence can have on other people when you show up in life. Body Awareness increases your sensitivity to your own sensations, which increases your pleasure. It increases your awareness of what is going on inside your body. I work in the medical field, and it's astounding how many people can't answer questions about how their body feels because they don't pay attention and develop their awareness. You actually need increased body awareness to achieve higher states of mental awareness. But, don't take my word for it. You need to experience this directly. This type of meditation is taught in dance, martial arts and yoga, and developed in different traditions around the world.

Why You Need It

You need to be able to move your mental awareness to places other than your head, to realize that your conscious, thinking mind, isn't all anchored in your brain. You need to have some experiences by exploring for yourself, in guided meditations, to realize you have a mental sense that can be moved around, in order to next move onto expanded awareness meditations and quantum meditations. You need to develop your skill of moving your mental focus to different locations and holding more than one focus at a time simultaneously, in order to do soul retrieval, memory flipping, quantum jumping, and meditations that use your imagination.
